WSI Nutrient Load Estimator

The Nutrient Load Estimator (NLE ) was created by Water Stewardship, Inc. (WSI). It is designed to calculate the estimated nutrient and sediment loads for agricultural and urban tracts at a community-level and the impact that a BMP or combination of BMPs will have on those loads. The methodology and the numbers used in NLE are adapted from the Chesapeake Bay Program’s Phase 5.3.2 Watershed Model.

WSI Programs Using NLE

WSI Eco-Label
WSI provides an eco-label for locally sourced products from farms that meet WSI certification standards. NLE is used to help determine if certification standards are being met by current conservation practices and to assist in identifying any additional practices that may be needed.

Farm Assessment and Continuous Improvement Program
WSI assesses, verifies, and quantifies the impact of current conservation practices on a farm and develops a Continuous Improvement Program to assist the farmer in meeting water quality expectations. NLE is used to estimate the farm’s nutrient load, their current progress, and the reductions that would occur if additional practices were implemented.

Ecosystem Service/Credit Estimation and Verification
WSI estimates and verifies ecosystem service practices for emerging water quality trading markets. NLE is used to estimate the nutrient and sediment load reductions that occur as a result of these practices.
